Easy to make healthy no onion no garlic pasta with bacon and cottage cheese, Turos Csusza

I fell in love with cottage cheese pasta with bacon on the first bite. The tradition of this meal roots back to Hungary so the real name is Turos Csusza. Peter surprised me with this no-onion no-garlic meal on one rainy day. I was teaching in the school the whole day. When I finally got home, he was waiting for me with dinner. It was so yummy, and an amazing surprise. Since that day, we have often been eating this Hungarian classic.

Turos Csusza is one of the most traditional Hungarian meals. It is a typical meal that you will find in kindergartens, schools, restaurants, and as a home-cooked meal. It is one of the secret gems of Hungarian cuisine, and it is extremely flavorsome. Besides that is it extremely easy to make and allium free. Fun facts about bacon

Bacon is extremely delicious, but it can be deadly. Elizabeth Browne was the first victim of bacon. She didn’t die because she ate too much bacon, but bacon killed her.

The story is happening on 2nd February 1543. Elizabeth Browne was a widow in bad health. Although she had health problems, she was working as a servant to Mr. Hugh Talmage. He had his estate in Huntingdon, England. Elizabeth was working on Mr. Hugh Talmage’s estate when she died.

On that fatal day, Elizabeth was trying to warm herself next to the fire when bacon fell on her. Mr. Hugh was drying his bacon in the kitchen chimney, and the rope broke. Because of the broken rope, 4 big blocks of bacon fall on Elizabeth. However, the bacon didn’t kill her on the spot. Elizabeth was heavily wounded, and she died 4 days later because of injuries.

How healthy is bacon?

Bacon is made from protein, and fats mainly, but it has a bit of carb. However, it doesn’t contain fibers.

Even though bacon contains a lot of fats, the majority of the fats are oleic acid which is very healthy. Olive oil contains oleic acid, and because oleic acid is healthy.

Also, bacon contains lots of salt. It is good for athletes to get electrolytes they lost by sweating while exercising. In addition, salt is important for people with low blood pressure. Eating enough salt and drinking water after consuming salt will keep blood pressure steady. In the case of low blood pressure, it is good to eat something salty, and drink a lot of water.

Bacon is good for the brain because it contains choline. Choline is keeping the brain healthy and helps with fighting dementia.

The charm of the Turos Csusza is that you don’t need to use lots of ingredients. Also, the ingredients are available in any store or online. Feel free to substitute the pasta with your favorite pasta type. Be sure that the mixture covers the pasta evenly for the best taste experience.

How to make Turos Csusza?

Tips and tricks

  • If you can’t find Csusza pasta, break some lasagna sheets or use any other pasta.
  • If there is not enough bacon grease in the pan, add a bit of cooking oil.
  • Add sour cream at the end, stir it once or twice, and remove it from the stove as soon as possible (do not let it be on the stove for more than a minute).

How to know if it’s done?

  • The pasta is cooked al dente.
  • Bacon is crispy.

  • The meal is not salty enough – add more salt
  • Bacon seems undercooked – fry it for a few moments longer before you mix it with the pasta and cheese mixture.

Bacon and Cottage Cheese Pasta (Turos Csusza)

Ingredients
  

  • 6 oz csusza pasta or lasagna sheets or any other pasta
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 3 tablespoon sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • 4 slices bacon
  • salt to taste

Instructions
 

  • Cook pasta with water and salt according to the package. If you don’t have csusza pasta, break the lasagna sheet into smaller pieces, or cook any other type of pasta.
  • Cut bacon into small pieces, and fry them in the pan.
  • Remove bacon from the pan, and in the grese from the bacon, fry pasta for 2 to 3 minute.
  • Add cottage cheese to the pasta and mix it to combine.
  • Add salt and parsley flakes to the pasta and cottage cheese. Mix it to combine.
  • Add sour cream, and stir it a few times to combine it with pasta and cottage cheese. Do not keep it too long on the stove.
  • Serve Bacon and cottage cheese pasta with sour cream and bacon pieces on the top.
